In the ever-evolving landscape of economic development, MCEC Director of Business Development Tony Liberal works to increase MCEC’s business portfolio and economic footing in the region.

One of Liberal’s key roles is forging connections and building bridges within the local business community. He actively engages with organizations like the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce and the Thurston County Economic Development Council (EDC), recognizing the importance of being an integral part of the communities MCEC serves.

“In my role as Director of Business Development, part of what I do is work with local communities,” Liberal said. “We aim to help the Nisqually Indian Tribe become a driving force in economic development in the Northwest. This involves collaborating with local chambers of commerce, EDCs, and networking with fellow business professionals.”

However, Liberal’s reach extends beyond local boundaries. He also represents MCEC on a national stage, attending events that bring together various Tribes and Indigenous communities. This strategic networking allows MCEC to explore new horizons and gather ideas that can lead to further expansion and diversification of our business portfolio.

“If I see a business endeavor that another Tribe has been successful in, I gauge whether Nisqually could also be successful in that arena, and I bring those ideas back home,” Liberal said. This proactive approach has already borne fruit, as MCEC has ventured into the property management industry, generating passive income and opening doors to further expansion.

In his commitment to understanding the local community’s needs, Liberal has taken on a pivotal role within a county-wide steering committee focused on economic development and tourism in Thurston County. Liberal’s participation in the committee positions MCEC further into the forefront of regional decision-making, ensuring the Tribe’s voice is heard in shaping the area’s economic direction.

Liberal acknowledges the groundwork laid by MCEC Chief Executive Officer Bob Iyall, whose leadership at the Port of Olympia has fostered a positive reputation for Nisqually in the community. Liberal’s mission is to build on this foundation and secure seats at as many tables as possible, advancing MCEC’s business endeavors.

Furthermore, Liberal has been instrumental in fostering collaboration with other BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) businesses in the region. His active participation in events like the South Sound BIPOC Roundtable is emblematic of MCEC’s commitment to supporting BIPOC businesses, recognizing that their success contributes to the collective prosperity of the community.

“We’ve recently entered into an agreement with a BIPOC-owned bakery to bring their products to Camas Coffee House and possibly Nisqually Markets Express,” Liberal said, highlighting the practical steps taken to realize this commitment.

As part of MCEC’s multifaceted approach, our organization actively participates in trade shows and similar events. A notable example is the partnership with a consulting company to capitalize on Medicine Creek Café’s recent recognitions through the Best of South Sound competition, further enhancing its presence in the culinary world.

Liberal’s dedication to promoting economic development, strengthening collaborations, and championing BIPOC businesses is propelling MCEC towards new heights of success. His work embodies MCEC’s commitment to both economic growth and community inclusivity, showcasing our organization as a leader in regional development.
